To file GSTR-9, log in to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal, open the annual return, match the auto-filled tables with your books and submit it with a digital signature or OTP. GSTR-9 consolidates your GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B data for one Financial Year (FY). For FY 2025-26, the due date is 31 December 2026.

Who needs to file GSTR-9?

All regular taxpayers file GSTR-9 except the groups below:

  • Businesses with turnover up to ₹2 crore, for whom filing is optional
  • Composition taxpayers, who file GSTR-4 instead
  • Input service distributors, casual and non-resident taxable persons and those who deduct or collect tax at source

Businesses with turnover above ₹5 crore must also file GSTR-9C, a reconciliation statement.

What should you keep ready before filing?

The portal opens GSTR-9 only after every GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B for the year has been filed. Keep these records ready:

  • Sales and purchase registers for the full year
  • Credit notes, debit notes and amendments
  • Input Tax Credit (ITC) records matched with GSTR-2B
  • Harmonised System of Nomenclature (HSN) summary of outward supplies
  • A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or your registered mobile number for an Electronic Verification Code (EVC)

How do you file GSTR-9 on the GST portal?

Follow these steps in order:

  1. Log in at https://gst.gov.in and go to Services > Returns > Annual Return.
  2. Select the financial year and click Search.
  3. Choose Yes for the nil return only if the year had no supplies, ITC or tax liability.
  4. Download the system-computed GSTR-9 summary.
  5. Open each table and compare the auto-filled figures with your books.
  6. Correct any figure that does not match.
  7. Enter the HSN summary in Table 17 or upload it through the GSTR-9 offline tool.
  8. Click Compute Liabilities to see any late fee payable.
  9. Preview the draft return in PDF or Excel.
  10. Tick the declaration, choose the authorised signatory and click File GSTR-9.
  11. Sign with DSC or EVC to receive the Acknowledgement Reference Number (ARN).

Pay any tax missed in GSTR-3B with interest through Form GST DRC-03.

What changed in GSTR-9 from FY 2024-25?

The FY 2024-25 format added these tables to track ITC across years:

  • Table 6A1 captures ITC of the previous year claimed in the current year.
  • Table 8A now draws from GSTR-2B up to October of the next year.
  • Table 8H1 reports import ITC claimed in the next year.

What happens if you file late or make a mistake?

Late fees under Section 47(2) of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act run from the due date until filing. The amounts below combine CGST and State GST (SGST):

No. GSTR-9 cannot be revised once filed. If you discover unpaid GST, you may need to pay the additional tax and applicable interest through Form GST DRC-03. However, DRC-03 does not revise the filed GSTR-9 or correct other reporting mistakes. Maintain supporting reconciliation records and respond through the prescribed process if the GST department issues a notice. The portal also blocks filing once three years have passed from the due date.

Conclusion

Most GSTR-9 errors start well before December. ITC without a matching GSTR-2B entry, missed credit notes, and wrong HSN codes surface at year-end. Monthly reconciliation with GSTR-1, GSTR-2B and GSTR-3B leaves little to fix in the annual return.

The upcoming TallyPrime Release 7.2 exports annual computation data in the GSTR-9 format, so book and portal figures can be compared side by side. It also sends the HSN summary to the GSTR-9 offline tool in one click, and differences can be traced to the voucher and corrected before you file.
